SILENCE PROJECT
Regent Building, Leeds

The idea of my sculpture was literally looking into yourself as when you look in the sculpture you see projection of the video showing fist-person being outside in the world asking himself questions of who is he and what is the meaning of his life.
Also it was very interesting to see how people react to my sculpture. I wanted to make them stop for a while and just think about their own lives. Some people passed by, however, others who saw what was inside were really amazed and had a very positive reaction.
The main part was the shape of the building - cube. The other shape that I used in this sculpture was always in my mind, it attracts me and the best word for it, in my opinion, is a shape of tornado that absorbs everything in its path. It is open, it is inviting to come and look into it, to be in it. Whereas, cube is closed and it is mysterious as you cannot know if it is empty inside or not. And I wanted to make this cone shape pierce this “treasure box” so that the viewer can peep into it.
Alongside with the sculpture I was preparing the video piece. I was inspired by many great artists that involve media in their works such as Benedict Drew, Mikhail Karikis and Phillippe parreno. In Karikis’s videos i found sound very interesting. Each his video is a narrative with layers of sounds which is like a social statement or a protest. In his work people make sounds that we would assosiate with sounds of nature. It is as a dialog between people and nature.
I became very interested in how do we hear world arond us and how do we make sounds ourselves. I did few test recordings of myself producing weird abstract sounds and sounds of different objects. I started to collect sounds long time ago, for example, if I go out and I hear an unusual sound i record it.
It was very difficult to make this sculpture technically. I wanted to do a big scale sculpture using different materials and workshops. I considered to use plaster, which would be very heavy and breakable as well, and it lead me to use mudrock on a chicken wire base. In the biginning, I made different sized circles out of hard wire connected them together and only then attached the chicken wire on this shape.
My sculpture had to be looked at and prepared very carefully as it had a projector with speakers inside and underestimating danger of them being there could lead to fire. So this project taught me a lot of transferrable skills of how to be a responsible artist that takes part in exhibition, how to solve the problems and manage the time.
